Marvel Confirms Vin Diesel Is Groot, As Though We Haven’t Known It For Months

In what might be Marvel’s strangest move since announcing the Guardians of Galaxy film in the first place, the company chose last night (the Saturday before Christmas) at about 10:00 to finally make the official announcement that Vin Diesel will be playing Groot – something that’s been well-known to everyone with an internet connection for months.

Along with the confirming the least well-kept secret in Hollywood, Marvel released this image of Diesel with his on-screen counterpart, the first look at what Treebeard’s less eloquent nephew will look like. So at least there’s that.

Guardians-of-the-Galaxy-Photos-Vin-Diesel-GrootAfter the announcement director James Gunn said of the casting,

“Yep it is completely official. AND he’s amazing. I never knew someone could say I AM GROOT so many different ways and with such feeling (and that sounds like I’m kidding but I’m not!).”

Part of the reason this whole thing is so weird is how open the actor has been about the role. For example, here’s a video of him on the set of Fast & Furious 7, practising walking on stilts for the motion capture and talking about the part to anyone who will listen. He even visits Djimon Hounsou’s trailer and calls him his “Guardians of the Galaxy brother.”
