For the past week or so, news has been slowly trickling out about Marvel’s upcoming wedding event. First there was that mysterious invitation, then came the announcement that the groom is, of all people, Deadpool.
This, of course, needed some explaining. Deadpool co-writer told Nerdist where the event came from.
The honest answer is that it was written into a Deadpool story, but more or less as a gag, and Jordan D. White, the editor, was like a dog with a bone. He was like, “No, no, no – this is going to be a big deal.” You know, we wrote it, so it’s not like we weren’t behind it. The fun thing has been – after his misadventures, I guess you’d call them, in North Korea, in the story arc “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly,” he learned a lot about himself and why he is the way he is. He doesn’t really have too much of a life. Yes, this is a knee-jerk reaction from a wounded guy to go out there and sort of do something crazy to sort of jump start a life, but there is a real emotional reason for doing it, so I think that will be the part that will resonate. Then the actual gags of the wedding will be fun too, but there is a real grounding to it, and that’s what will make it fun to explore.
Now it’s time for a little more of what to expect when the big day gets here. Artists Mike Hawthorne and Scott Koblish won’t just be making Gerry Duggan and Brian Posehn’s deranged rantings look nice this time. The issue features new stories from Fabian Nicieza, Mark Waid, Joe Kelly, Christopher Priest, Jimmy Palmiotti, Frank Tieri, Gail Simone*, Daniel Way and Victor Gischler. If they’ve written Deadpool, they’re probably in this issue.

All that’s left now is to find out who the bride is, and if Disney can get some synergy going.
* – It’s kind of a big deal to point out that this is Gail Simone’s first work for Marvel in 10 years. She split with the company after a dispute with an editor on Not Deadpool Agent X, and has been with the Distinguished Competition since.
