And The New DOCTOR WHO Companion Is… EDIT – Now With CAPTAIN AMERICA Still

The cast and crew of Doctor Who haven’t exactly been quiet about the departure of fan-favorite companions Amy and Rory this season, so of course speculation has run rampant about the hows and whens and obviously who would be taking their place in the big blue box. Those answers came this morning. Honestly, a lot more of them than I think any of expected to get.

If you want to know, read on past the…

First let’s get the big news out of the way. The new companion is going to be played Jenna-Louise Coleman. She had a small part in Captain America (She played Connie. Was she one of the USO girls?) and was in a bunch of BBC shows that you may or may not (probably not) have seen (Emmerdale, Waterloo Road).

Showrunner Steven Moffat had this to say about Ms. Coleman’s casting,

It always seems impossible when you start casting these parts, but when we saw Matt and Jenna together we knew we had our girl. She’s funny and clever and exactly mad enough to step on board the TARDIS.

It’s not often the Doctor meets someone who can talk even faster than he does, but it’s about to happen. Jenna is going to lead him his merriest dance yet. And that’s all you’re getting for now. Who she’s playing, how the Doctor meets her, and even where he finds her, are all part of one of the biggest mysteries the Time Lord ever encounters. Even by the Doctor’s standards, this isn’t your usual boy meets girl.

That’s not it for Who news today though. The official Doctor Who Twitter laid out the episode plans for the rest of the 2012.

There will be 6 episodes this year, including the Xmas Special. Then 8 next year. Jenna’s character will first be seen at Xmas.

Even that’s not the last of it, as Moffat (via the same Twitter account, not his own) also told us when, and most likely how, the Ponds would be leaving the show.

Steven “Amy & Rory will leave in a final encounter with the Weeping Angels in ep 5. Not everyone gets out alive and I mean it this time”

Get ready to watch with some tissues.

EDIT –

In case you were curious, here’s Jenna-Louise Coleman as Connie in Captain America. She had two lines as Bucky’s date to the World’s Fair.
