SDCC News – THOR And CAPTAIN AMERICA (And AVENGERS!) Movie Panel
Written by Skott Stoland on 07/25/2010 – 12:23 AM -Here’s the big one, the panel pretty much everyone was waiting for (waiting an extra hour for), and pretty much everyone will be talking about. The Marvel movie panel.
The panel starts with Captain America footage. Description from ComingSoon.net.
We’re staring with Captain America and they showed a great teaser for the movie which started with an air raid siren, which led to archival footage of World War II with famous quotes voiced over the top. We can see that there’s an alternating red, white and blue background as we see different scenes from World War II.
The titles say… “In the world’s greatest (something), Our Courage and Strength Led Us Into Battle. Stories Emerged of Heroes, But One Story Has Never Been Told.”
The red, white and blue background slowly pulls back to show us that it is indeed Captain America’s shield.
There’s a voiceover of Teddy Roosevelt saying “Today we must create the finest army in history, and every army starts with one man.”
And we see Captain America in shadow. (The crowd goes wild.)
“Next summer, meet the world’s first Avenger.”
And we see our first look as Chris Evans as Captain America. (Crowd goes wilder.)
Then we see the “Captain America” logo and the next shot has Captain America throwing his shield at the camera
They’re very early in the shoot, in fact Evans has only been filming for five days. Which is why Marvel’s President of Production Kevin Feige tells the audience that what they just saw isn’t actually from the film. It’s from the costume test. Evans hasn’t actually filmed in his suit yet.
Next up is some of the little bit of footage they have shot. It’s a Red Skull scene. From G4.
They’re going to show us what they shot just last week!
It’s very rough…still has time code on it!
Norway, May 1942
A wall is broken down by German soldiers.
The Red Skull comes walking through the giant hole in the wall!
He pushes the top off a tomb…
and grabs a glass cube and drops it on the ground.
The Red Skull opens a secret compartment in the wall by pushing on the eye of a snake. He opens the box and a blue light comes out of it.
The footage looks fantastic! Very Raiders of the Lost Ark!
And we’re right into Thor.
Kenneth Branagh comes out and starts to talk about his long-time love of the comic. “The one I loved was Thor. I loved the name, I loved the fact that he is a character with the combination of brute strength, I liked that he was in a very dysfunctional family and that the stories were epic”
Tom Hiddleston says of Loki, “He’s a great liar and it was fun playing with is he lying or is he telling the truth.”
Thor footage, of course. Description from Newsarama.
so the trailer of THOR did clarify how the world of Thor blends into the modern day world.
It was 3D btw. Thor and Odin have a strained relationship, and the All-Father casts out his son to earth, hoping he learns to become worthy of his name, powers, and title. Sweeping shots of the Golden REalm of Asgard are shown, the Asgardians in battle gear, including Thor.
Thor is seen being interrogated by Gregg’s SHIELD AGENT, about who he is, and where he comes from, and where he learned his fighting techniques.
At one point, Thor tells Portman, who found him in the desert after Odin banished him.. he tells her about his past and his powers….”your ancestors called it magic. You call it science. In my land, its one and the same.”
During the audience Q&A, someone asks about Don Blake, Branagh says to expect some “Don Blake surprises.”
Natalie Portman says that she won’t be in Avengers, but she will be in Thor 2 and 3 if they happen.
An audience member walks up to the mic and just shouts “Edward Norton!”
Feige handles it well, answering, “he won’t be here today.” As the crowd boos, Feige adds that Marvel loves continuity and remaining respectful to the characters, but as Norton himself said, The Hulk is bigger than any actor. He goes on to say that the panel isn’t over. Hmmm, I wonder what that could mean?
When asked about the possibility of R-rated films in Marvel’s future, Feige answers that The Punisher is back in Marvel’s hands. Not only that, but they plan to introduce him into the Marvel Movie Universe soon.
Avengers Teaser?!? Who could have seen this coming? Oh yea, everyone.
Samuel L. Jackson comes out, followed by Scarlett Johansson, Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth.
RDJ starts talking about The Avengers and introduces Jeremy Renner and “reprising his role as Bruce Banner… Mark Ruffalo!”
Joss Whedon comes out and tells the crowd that, “I have had a dream all my life and it was not this good.” He went on to add “This is The Avengers! This cast is more than I could have ever dreamed of working with.”
And as the The Avengers have assembled on stage, the culmination of a shared filmic universe, Whedon ends the panel with a simple promise, “See you soon!”
