It seems that for the entire production of The Avengers fans have been trying to guess (or confidently demanding that they know) the identity of Loki’s otherworldly army. Though, if we’re being honest, even earlier than that some fans were insisting that the Avengers were going up against Thanos because the Infinity Gauntlet was at SDCC and it may or may not have been in Thor depending on who you talk to. Early money (before any plot points had ever been revealed) was put on either the Kree, the Skrulls, or the Skrulls’ Ultimate counterparts the Chitauri.
The Chitauri theory really took hold last month when director Joss Whedon outright said he wasn’t using the Kree or the Skrulls. The fans seem to think he was using some sort of sly semantic trickery. Come on, guys. It’s not like he’s Steven Moffat.
However, the new TV spots that debuted this weekend might finally shed a little bit of light on this mystery by giving us the clearest view yet of who Earth’s Mightiest Heroes will be facing next month. (Next month?!? Holy shit, it really does come out four weeks from this Friday.)

It’s looking like now the smart bets might be on the Disir, a exiled race from Asgard’s past, with ties to Loki. The logic works and they certainly look the part.
