STAR WARS 7 News: New Cast Members, Set Photos

When the cast for Star Wars: Episode VII, the first episode of the New Trilogy, was announced, it was rightly called out for the same issue as both the Original and Prequel Trilogies – a distinct lack of women. It’s assumed Carrie Fisher (as with Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford) will only be appearing in a small role in this film to see the new kids off. The only woman joining the franchise was Daisy Ridley.

Ridley won’t be quite so alone in the boys’ club with the addition of two more women to the cast, Lupita Nyong’o and Gwendoline Christie.

Lupita Nyong’o, of course, won an Oscar for her role in 12 Years a Slave and has been rumored for a Star Wars role for months. Gwendoline Christie is best known for Game of Thrones, where she plays Brienne of Tarth.

In other Star Wars news, JJ Abrams probably thought filming in the middle of the desert in Abu Dhabi would be enough to keep the set of Episode 7 away from the prying eyes of the paparazzi. And it was. What he didn’t count on was an extra with a phone taking pictures and selling them to TMZ.

The good news is the shots confirm what we’ve been hearing about Abrams going back to the franchise’s roots and shooting on real sets with practical effects whenever possible.

The bad news is a leak like this is probably going to put him into full Mystery Box mode, and we won’t hear a damn thing for as long as Disney will let him, and even then it will be the barest minimum he’ll need to say.

This thing apparently had five guys inside of it puppeteering.

For a ton more pictures (and I can’t believe I’m saying this), go to TMZ. They’re mostly shots of extras standing around, but you get to see some of the costumes, and there’s a couple of pictures that may or may not be spoilery, we don’t yet know the context.

It’s a pretty safe bet though that all the extras are going to very heavily searched from now on.
