FLCL Seasons 2 and 3 Get A Trailer And A Vague Release Date

How am I just now hearing about this?

Last year, Adult Swim announced they were teaming with Production I.G. to produce additional seasons of FLCL, easily my favorite anime and one of my favorite animated series, full stop. Somehow, that news went under my radar but thankfully the newly-released trailer did not sneak past me.

FLCL 2 and 3, which will air dubbed on Adult Swim’s Toonami block and subbed on the Adult Swim website, are set to debut in 2018. Here’s how the network describes the new episodes –

In the new season of FLCL, many years have passed since Naota and Haruhara Haruko shared their adventure together. Meanwhile, the war between the two entities known as Medical Mechanica and Fraternity rages across the galaxy. Enter Hidomi, a young teenaged girl who believes there is nothing amazing to expect from her average life, until one day when a new teacher named Haruko arrives at her school. Soon enough, Medical Mechanica is attacking her town and Hidomi discovers a secret within her that could save everyone, a secret that only Haruko can unlock.

But why did Haruko return to Earth? What happened to her Rickenbacker 4001 she left with Naota? And where did the human-type robot ‘Canti’ go?

While some of the original creative team is back (character designer Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, original series director Kazuya Tsurumaki, The Pillows), most of the crew will be made up of staff from shows like One-Punch Man, Mob Psycho 100, My Hero Academia and Naruto. Production I.G’s Maki Terashima-Furuta explained why the new team was necessary – “the original creators that worked on it are getting old and in order to make something equally as good, we needed to do something different. That’s what the original creator Tsurumaki-san said.”
