Have you heard the news? Fox is going to cross over its two Marvel comics properties, Avengers-style, giving fans the X-Men/Fantastic Four movie they’ve (apparently?) been begging for. Of course you’ve heard it. You’re on the internet. The problem is, it’s complete bullshit.
It all started when The Motley Fool ran an article about Sony and Fox and their respective Marvel properties. The piece included this juicy tidbit about Fox’s plans for the X-Men and Fantastic Four,
Fox owns the rights to the Fantastic Four and the X-Men characters, who are among the most well-known comic book heroes of all time. After multiple movies in their respective franchises, Fox has now decided to combine the Fantastic Four and the X-Men for an “Avengers”-style movie that could pay off huge for shareholders.
Based on a 1987 four issue comic called Fantastic Four vs. X-Men, the movie will see the characters against each other because of secrets regarding the Fantastic Four’s origin.
Pretty amazing news to drop in the middle of a financial news article, right? Hell, it trucks with the boasts that Mark Millar had been throwing around months ago. So it’s understandable why everyone ran with it.
Unfortunately, it’s just not the case. The Motley Fool has already edited their article to admit their mistake –
Note: A previous version of this article inaccurately reported a planned film release that combined both X-Men and Fantastic Four. The Fool regrets the error.
– anyone else going to do the same?
