Ok. Time to fess up. Which one of you has the monkey paw? Because clearly cruelly ironic wish fulfillment is the only explanation here.
Pacific Rim 2 is back on, with actual movement happening on the thought-to-be-dead sequel. Unfortunately, none of the creative team involved with the first film are returning.
Neither director Guillermo del Toro or writer Travis Beacham are both sitting this one out (though the pair will get “based on characters created by” credits and del Toro will be listed as an executive producer). Daredevil and Spartacus showrunner Steven S. DeKnight will take over the vacated director’s chair. Meanwhile Prometheus and Doctor Strange writer Jon Spaihts* will be handling the script.
This is DeKnight’s first film, though he has previously directed for Daredevil, Dollhouse, Smallville and Angel. Spaihts on the other hand, Prometheus is probably his only credit you’ve actually seen.
I’m not sure how I feel about a Pacific Rim sequel with no real input from its creators. I’m thinking apprehensive. They’re even tossing the script del Toro handed in a few months ago. That does not bode well.
*- Supposedly Spaihts’ Prometheus script was heavily rewritten by Damon Lindelof into the trainwreck we ended up with.
