I didn’t think this day would ever come – really for real proof that Preacher is coming to TV. Check it out, then we’ll talk a little more about it.
It’s been a very long time since I’ve read Preacher (though I loved it when it came out) so I’m not seeing a lot that’s too familiar here. Maybe a reread is in my future. Even still the trailer looks very cool, if a little in AMC’s house style (it does look like some shots could have come from Walking Dead or Breaking Bad). Really though, I’m just glad the show is finally happening.
People have been trying to adapt Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s classic Vertigo comic since the 90s, before the series had even finished its run. Ennis himself wrote the script for a film version to be directed by Rachel Talalay, still fairly new to director jail after 95’s Tank Girl (she’s only worked in TV since, most recently for Doctor Who). At one point Daredevil and Ghost Rider director Mark Steven Johnson was developing it for HBO. Even the actually-talented Same Mendes (American Beauty, Skyfall, this week’s Spectre) was attached for a while. Those attempts all fell through.
Who ever would have thought that the team of Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg (This is the End, The Interview) would be the ones to get the job done?
The series will star Dominic Cooper (Captain America: The First Avenger, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and Agent Carter) as Jesse Custer, Joseph Gilgun (Misfits, The Last Witch Hunter) as Cassidy and Ruth Negga (also Misfits, Agents of SHIELD) as Tulip O’Hare.
