INDEPENDENCE DAY Sequel Gets A Trailer, But Where’s Will Smith?

It’s been almost 20 years since Bill Paxton Pullman told the world that “the Fourth of July will no longer be known as an American holiday.” It’s been a tense two decades, waiting for the alien invaders’ inevitable return, never knowing just when they’d darken our skies again. But they are, indeed, coming back and here’s our first look.

Despite the return of many of the original Independence Day‘s stars, you might have noticed one glaring, Fresh Prince shaped hole in the cast. Thankfully, the viral marketing site warof1996.com is live and ready to explain not only Smith’s absence, but what else happened in the movie’s world since the invasion.

The site fills out the timeline between the two films with some gloriously goofy sci-fi including moonbases and hybrid technology weapons (the testing of one such fighter jet leads to the death of Will Smith’s StevenĀ Hiller).

Independence Day: Resurgence comes outĀ on June 24, 2016 – just two weeks shy of the 20th anniversary of the first film.
