Writing Has Begun On PACIFIC RIM Sequel

Pacific Rim screenwriter (and prequel comic writer) Travis Beacham is a creator more involved in a fandom than almost any I can think of. Since the film’s release he’s spent countless hours on Tumblr answering fans’ questions about the minutiae of the universe he’s created. As a reward to the fans for hitting 10,000 followers he wrote out a lengthy description of a pair of Korean Jaeger pilots that had been unmentioned in any of the existing fiction and told the fanfic writers to have fun.

However, in recent days his Tumblr has gone strangely quiet, even posting this cryptic message yesterday.

Sorry I’m not blogging more, guys. Getting some great questions but I’m super busy right now. Rest assured I’m putting a pin in a few.

It seems now, though, we have an explanation.

Director Guillermo del Toro spoke with IGN and told them that work has begun on the script for Pacific Rim 2.

We are writing the sequel. Travis Beacham and I are writing, so that is active. The decision to green light or not, that’s definitely above my pay rate.

Del Toro went on to talk about the fan reaction and how it affects his desire to make another film.

To me, what was beautiful and flattering was how people saw the movie not once or twice but three, four times or more. People that love it, love it with great passion. So I would love to continue telling stories about that world.

Bear in mind the director did say that the sequel is not yet greenlit, but with a $407.6m worldwide box office on a $190m budget it’s hard to imagine they’d not make another one.
